Day 19: Lambeyri Campsite – Stykkishólmur
We make a big leap westward, driving as far as Stykkishólmur at the base of the peninsula that holds the Snæfellsjökull glacier.
There’s nothing going on in Akureyri, even though we thought there was a motorcycle and vintage car rally taking place. Perhaps that’s happening closer to the weekend.
Along the route on the Vatnsnes Peninsula, we take a walk to Hvítserkur (a bizarre rock formation) and to the first seal colony we’ve seen on this trip.
A few viewpoints, some lighthouses. A stopover for a midday coffee in Hvammstangi. We skip the seal museum – somehow, we’d already done that back in Kiel :-)
Stykkishólmur is spectacularly situated amidst an archipelago of small islands, surrounded by high mountains. A stunning landscape. Unfortunately, the wind has really picked up, and there’s little shelter at the campsite. It’s going to be a noisy night. It’s a good thing we only need to reheat our meal – which we do inside the car, probably for the first time.
We get a bit of exercise after eating; on our walk through the town and out to the lighthouse, we nearly get blown away.
